On the occasion of the inauguration of the bicycle display in La Hulpe (Walloon Brabant, Belgium), the Service Public de Wallonie (SPW) shared with the general public news of its recent deployment of a vast network of bicycle counters at regional level.
Krycer bv, the official distributor of Eco-Counter products in Belgium, has recently finalized the deployment of an additional 100 bicycle and pedestrian counters for the Walloon region. They will join the 95 counters already installed by Wallonia’s communes and provinces.
The counters are part of the monitoring and promotional actions of the Wallonia Cycling Plan. The aim of this plan is to increase the cycling modal share from 2% to 5% by 2030.
An ambitious policy to promote active modes of transport
“The new government intends to improve active modes of travel,” detailed Frédéric Razée, advisor to Wallonia’s Minister of Mobility, François Desquesnnes. “The installation of counters is part of an objective to raise awareness of active modes among the general public, but also to analyze flows. Counting the number of cyclists and pedestrians on the roads enables us to analyze the evolution of cycling and guide mobility policies. This is a performance indicator.”
Of the 100 or so counters to be installed (or already installed), some will be solar-powered Eco-DISPLAYs, making it possible to share daily and monthly bicycle ridership. These communication tools will make it possible to track progress and encourage people to cycle more.
Data sharing
The data collected by all the counters will also soon be available on the cyclable.wallonie.be portal, whose visual identity has just been revamped, with a new website and logo.
