Singapore, a densely populated island, is the third most densely populated country in the world. There is a great demand for housing and urban facilities. Despite these mounting demands, a dedicated urban gardens policy was put forward by National Parks Board of Singapore government to help develop urban greenery in the city. Gardens by the Bay was built as part of this plan by world-class landscape architects. Read more below about how their counting project helped to assess the impact of the Gardens and track visitor traffic trends.
Local Context
Gardens by the Bay is a natural urban park spanning 101 hectares (250 acres) of reclaimed land in central Singapore. It features no less than 500,000 different species of plants. The park is extremely popular, and welcomed its 20 millionth visitor in November 2015. It is divided into three different gardens: Bay South Garden, Bay East Garden and Bay Central Garden. The largest is Bay South Garden at 54 hectares (130 acres). Due to its large size and its location, it features many entrances each with a specific attendance profile.
Counting Visitors
A total of 17 counters were installed at several entrances of Gardens to follow trends in visitor traffic. The data was used to communicate and justify the investment made to create the urban park.
Count data enabled key stakeholders to build effective communication campaigns when, for instance, welcoming its one-millionth and its ten millionth visitor.
Counters recorded precise measurements of the impact of special events on park visitation. For instance, more than 80,000 people visited the Gardens the week of the Grand Opening, a high figure which was only rivaled during National Day. Concerts performed by Jason Mraz and Jennifer Lopez drew over 60,000 people to the Gardens the week of the event.
