Study bike usage patterns on extensive trail network
It can be difficult to have a holistic picture of bike usage along a 3,000-mile bike trail network. However, the province of Québec in partnership with Vélo Québec, has succeeded with the world famous Route Verte (Green Route). Attendance peaks and long-term trends have been measured at multiple locations along the extensive trail network with the help of 18 automatic counting systems. The accuracy and reliability of the data from these counters has made it possible to compare usage along multiple sections of the network. The authorities have used this information to better manage maintenance schedules and upgrades to the network.
Count data can also be used to:
- Measure the number cyclists using a cycling route or network.
- Identify peak visitation periods (by hour, day, week or season)
- Determine the impact of the weather on visitation
